The Accelerator Oscillator (AC) is an indicator developed by Bill Williams that helps traders gauge changes in momentum. It is based on the Awesome Oscillator (AO) and measures the difference between that indicator and its 5-period moving average, effectively showing how quickly the AO changes and predicting what it will do next. The principle of operation of the Accelerator Oscillator is based on the assumption of its creator Bill Williams that before the change of the direction of the price movement, the momentum of its change should fall. It runs with two modified indicators, AO and AC. A Buy signal is generated when the AO green bars cross up over the zero line and the AC has three consecutive positive green bars. A Sell signal is generated when the AO red bars cross down under the zero line and the AC has three consecutive negative red bars.

When the AO is below the zero line, we can determine that the short term moving average, 5 period SMA of median price, is lower than the 34 period moving

Combining AO with other indicators There is a known approach of using Awesome Oscillator (AO) together with Acceleration Oscillator (AC). The AO is used to determine the main trend while AC is used to find short-term overbought/oversold conditions in that trend.
